Chlorambucil is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient present in Celkeran. It is an alkylating chemotherapy drug. This is a chemotherapy drug, used for treating cancer, especially chronic lymphocytic leukemia. It can treat cancer by preventing the growth and development of cancer cells in the body.
Celkeran is used to treat several kinds of cancer and other conditions, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, breast, ovarian & testicular cancer, Waldenstrom’smacroglobulinemia, thrombocythemia and choriocarcinoma. It can be prescribed for both adults and children
Celkeran consists of Chlorambucil. It belongs to a class of drug known as cytotoxic also called chemotherapy. In cancer, certain cells in the body grow and multiply too fast. Chemotherapy (anti-cancer) medicines like chlorambucil work by preventing the growth and division of cells, and this reduces the number of cancer cells that the body makes and thus it helps in treating a cancer.
Do not take the drug if you: Are allergic to this active ingredient Chlorambucilor any other ingredient of Celkeran; Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant in the near future; Are a breastfeeding woman.
Tell your doctor if you: Have had radiotherapy or chemotherapy at present or recently; Have nephrotic syndrome a kidney problem; Have an epilepsy, fit, or any mental disorder; Have any liver or kidney problem.
The dosage depends upon your age, weight, medical condition and your response to the treatment. Therefore, your doctor will decide the dose. Take the dose exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Never take two 1 mg tablets to substitute one 2 mg Tablet.
Celkeran is usually recommended to be taken daily on an empty stomach. The tablet is to be swallowed with a glass of water. Take Celkeran exactly as your doctor prescribed to you. Do not break or chew the tablet. You should take the dose until you finish the prescription. Do not change the dose or stop it even if you feel better. You should complete the prescribed dose. In case of an overdose, get emergency medical attention or call the doctor immediately. If you miss a dose of Celkeran, then take it as soon as you remember. Never take the missed dose if the time to take the next dose is almost up. Taking multiple doses at almost the same time can lead to excess medication in your body which can be harmful.
Side effects of the drug: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, mouth ulcer, and rash are the common side effects of Chlorambucil.
If any of these effects continuing for a longer time or become worse, contact your doctor immediately. Celkeran may rarely cause serious side effects such as jaundice, fit or convulsion, drop in the number of white blood cells and platelets, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, rapid heart rate, trouble concentration, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.
Do not share Celkeran with anyone else, even if they show similar symptoms as you do. Do not use Celkeran for any other disease without consulting with the doctor. In case you do not feel comfortable after completing the medication prescribed by your doctor, then consult your doctor immediately. Do not freeze Celkeran and store the medicine at room temperature.
